About the event

Advent is a special time of year but for many of us it’s also a time when we feel the pressure.

Our liturgical calendar turns, and we transition from Ordinary Time into Advent reflection and preparation. Yet there is frenetic activity in the world around us. Mince pies are in the shops by the beginning of November, Christmas movies and adverts are on TV earlier and earlier and the great feast of Christmas seems to take longer and longer to prepare for.

How do we balance the busyness against our need to spend time with God?

How do we prevent our spiritual preparation being pushed out by material preparation?

In this retreat we will explore this dilemma together, using a combination of Scripture, poetry, music, led reflection and prayer. We’ll take time for personal reflection and silence and look for opportunities for spiritual preparation in the everyday.

The Venerable Jane Proudfoot is the Archdeacon of Macclesfield and moved into that role following 15 years in parish ministry. She understands the demands the Advent and Christmas season place on licensed ministers and laity. “I love this time of year, the build-up of excitement and the joy it brings. Holding on to the beauty of the season and revelling in it’s sacred specialness is something I’ve tried hard to do. I hope that you will join me on this short retreat to re-focus and re-centre ourselves as we wait for the arrival of the Christ-child.”
